U.S. Carrier Moves to Gulf as Iran and Oman Advance Hormuz Shipping Route

The Strait of Hormuz remains at the center of a widening U.S.-Iran confrontation as commercial shipping continues to operate at exceptionally low levels, Iran and Oman work on a proposed navigation framework, and the United States adjusts its military presence in the Middle East. The arrival of the USS George Washington in the region marks another significant development. The carrier is replacing the USS Abraham Lincoln after the Lincoln spent more than 250 days deployed amid the continuing conflict with Iran. At the same time, Iran and Oman have reached an understanding over the geographic coordinates of a proposed shipping route through Hormuz. However, the arrangement does not represent a full reopening of the waterway, and normal commercial traffic has yet to return.
