Renewed Diplomacy and Regional Talks Signs of renewed diplomacy between Washington and Tehran initially offered a narrow opening for de-escalation even as attacks on commercial shipping kept the Middle East crisis highly unstable. Pakistan's Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said the United States and Iran appeared to be moving closer to some form of arrangement, while regional mediation efforts involving Oman focused on possible mechanisms for managing commercial traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.
